Island First Nations gather to discuss marine safety

Chief Gordon Planes and the TB次元官网网址橲ou-ke Nation are hosting a forum to share ideas about marine safety March 25 and 26.

TB次元官网网址橲ou-ke Nation Chief Gordon Planes sees opportunity and risk for First Nations in the increased level of pace and resource development happening along B.C.B次元官网网址檚 coast.

ThatB次元官网网址檚 why he and his community are bringing together leaders of Island coastal First Nations for the TB次元官网网址橲ou-ke Nation Marine Safety and Risk Reduction Summit next week at the Prestige Oceanfront Resort in Sooke.

The summit will act as a forum to share ideas about marine safety, as well as habitat protection and restoration in the context of energy development, with the potential for growth in employment and training opportunities for West Coast First Nations.

Workshops will be led by representatives from the federal and provincial government, as well as relevant non-government agencies and training bodies. Participants will also receive hands-on spill response training from the Western Canada Marine Response Corporation.

The event, running March 25 and 26, is free for delegates from Island First Nations, but registration is required.
