Donations destined to help the Ukrainian Safe Haven were damaged early Tuesday (June 27) morning in a fire that is now under investigation and considered suspicious by authorities.
Paul Obersteller, fire inspector with Langford Fire Rescue, said the West Shore RCMP were called first after a donation bin in the parking lot of the Langford Canadian Tire was discovered with burn marks, and requested his crews respond to ensure the fire was completely out.
Obersteller said it had actually burned itself out some time overnight, and security camera footage reviewed as part of the investigation revealed a person had set the fire around 3:30 a.m. He said the same individual, who has not yet been identified, was caught on camera looking through several other donation and garbage bins in the area overnight.
At this point, no motive has been established, but Obersteller said there is some good news about the damage caused by the fire.
He said there is significant cosmetic damage to the donation bin and the decorative wrap on it, but a good amount of the recyclables inside the bin survived the fire, and should still be worth something once cleaned up.
