Good news for Island rail proponents could be coming Tuesday (June 28).
B.C. Premier Christy Clark is scheduled to make a funding announcement regarding Island passenger rail service at 10:45 a.m. at the Nanaimo Train Station.
While no details were revealed, it is expected Clark will announce financial support in response to the Island Corridor Foundation's request for a $15-million investment in the aging and unsafe rails and rail bed.
Passenger rail service was shut down in April due to safety concerns arising from the deteriorating condition of the tracks, which were found to be far worse than anticipated during routine maintenance and inspection this spring. Island freight service continues, although with trains running at reduced speeds due to the condition of the tracks.
The ICF is a non-profit partnership representing a variety of Island municipalities, regional district and First Nations which has owned the rail infrastructure since 2006.
Check back after Tuesday's announcement for a full details from the announcement.
