Gas leak on Goldstream Avenue forces temporary road closure, school evacuation

Goldstream Avenue has reopened to traffic, students back in class at Spencer Middle School

Emergency crews were called to a gas leak in the 1000-block of Goldstream Avenue late Tuesday morning.

A three-inch line was struck at a construction site near the Leigh Road and Goldstream Avenue intersection. Traffic in both directions on Goldstream Avenue was rerouted between Leigh and Spencer roads.

Fortis BC was able to turn off the line within roughly an hour of it being struck and Goldstream Avenue fully reopened shortly before noon.

Officials at nearby Spencer Middle School decided to do a self-evacuation of the building as a precaution due to a strong smell of rotten eggs in some of the classrooms.

Fortis BC officials inspected the school and did a meter reading before kids returned to classes on their first day back from spring break.
