The Capital Regional District (CRD) board is not backing an alternative Malahat route through CRD lands for public use.

The board endorsed two resolutions Wednesday that oppose any new public highway infrastructure through CRD lands.

Instead, the board considered writing to the province about implementing measures that B次元官网网址渁ddress congestion, safety and emergency closuresB次元官网网址 without establishing an emergency route through the Greater Victoria Water Supply Area or through Sooke Hills Regional Park.

The board openly opposed highway infrastructure in these areas following concerns about drinking water protection, biological diversity and outdoor recreation.

The CRD was approached by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure in the fall about the need for a South Island transportation plan and alternate route for the Malahat section of the Trans-Canada Highway.

Since then the CRD has continued to work with the ministry to evaluate and report options for the route.
