Belmont students nearly hit their mark of collecting 10,000 items of food in one night for the Goldstream Food Bank, and expect to exceed it by Christmas break.

Student volunteers collected 9,145 items of food going door-to-door to residences during a three-hour period on last Wednesday. Generous souls also donated $250 in cash and one person donated a $150 gift card from a local grocery store.

With donations still being accepted students expect the 10,000-item goal will be reached by the time the school goes to Christmas break.

About 200 students and teacher volunteers helped run the event, with some also volunteering their time the next day to help sort the food at the food bank.
