Provincial leaders across Canada are taking turns criticizing the federal Liberal governmentB次元官网网址檚 proposal to alleviate immigration pressure on Quebec and Ontario by resettling asylum seekers more equitably across the country.

New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs set the ball in motion when he told the Greater Moncton Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday that Ottawa was proposing the province take in 4,600 asylum seekers without providing financial assistance.

The next day, after his comments were called B次元官网网址渓argely fictitiousB次元官网网址 by the federal immigration minister, Higgs stood his ground.

B次元官网网址淗ow many of this 4,600 that is being proposed B次元官网网址 how many are actually, actual genuine asylum seekers? Because they havenB次元官网网址檛 gone through the process,B次元官网网址 the New Brunswick premier told reporters.

The federal government has been under immense pressure from Quebec to reduce the number of temporary immigrants in the province, especially asylum seekers. The Quebec premier has said that in the last two years, the number of temporary immigrants in Quebec has doubled to 600,000 from 300,000. Ontario has also called on the federal government for help, citing the disproportionate number of would-be refugees in that province.

Speaking after a Liberal caucus meeting Wednesday in British Columbia, federal Immigration Minister Marc Miller challenged HiggsB次元官网网址檚 remarks, saying they were B次元官网网址渉ighly irresponsible.B次元官网网址

B次元官网网址淲e at no time have said that we would impose asylum seekers on provinces without financial compensation.B次元官网网址

Miller said federal and provincial officials had met during the summer to discuss federal funding and responsibilities for distributing asylum seekers across the country so they could integrate into the labour market. B次元官网网址淚n order to move forward, we have to put numbers on the table on what an aspirational number of asylum seekers would look like,B次元官网网址 Miller said.

The minister said the numbers in question were based on models reflecting each provinceB次元官网网址檚 population. He said smaller provinces have a responsibility to take in more asylum seekers to lower the pressure on Ontario and Quebec.

But he said this does not mean New Brunswick would be forced to take in 4,600 asylum seekers. B次元官网网址淲e would expect the provinces like New Brunswick to do its part, but the last thing we want to see done is for this to be politicized,B次元官网网址 Miller said.

Miller went on to suggest that New Brunswick ministers had indicated the province didnB次元官网网址檛 want to admit any asylum seekers, regardless of federal compensation. And he confirmed that some other provinces were also opposed to letting them in.

B次元官网网址淲e are looking at a number of other incentives that would push provinces that are recalcitrant,B次元官网网址 he said.

ItB次元官网网址檚 not just New Brunswick pushing back against OttawaB次元官网网址檚 proposal.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said her government was also opposed to having more asylum seekers in her province.

B次元官网网址淎lthough Alberta represents only 11.8 per cent of the Canadian population, we are currently supporting approximately 22 per cent B次元官网网址 over 70,000 B次元官网网址 of Ukrainian evacuees who arrived in Canada,B次元官网网址 she said in a statement.

B次元官网网址淲e are informing the Government of Canada that until further notice, Alberta is not open to having these additional asylum seekers settled in our province.B次元官网网址

Miller posted a letter on social media from Smith late Thursday, where the Alberta premier expressed concern at the low number of immigrants allocated for the province for the year. The province requested 14,000 immigrants in 2024 but only got 9,750, she said in the letter.

B次元官网网址淎dditionally, Alberta is welcoming a substantive number of Ukrainian evacuees, with over 57,000 evacuees currently in Alberta. It is anticipated that upwards of 93 per cent of Ukrainian evacuees will stay in Alberta and seek permanent residency,B次元官网网址 she said in the letter, adding that figure represents about 24,000 families.

More of the temporary Ukrainian immigrants should be given opportunities to become permanent residents, she added.

The decision by the federal government to reduce the immigrant numbers shows that the province has to advocate for itself for more involvement in decisions regarding immigration policy, she said in the undated letter. B次元官网网址淪hould the federal government continue to not be responsive to our requests, Alberta will assess areas where we can push for larger role in immigration and settlement services to better our provinces interests.B次元官网网址

SmithB次元官网网址檚 executive director, Rob Anderson, responded to Miller on social media, accusing the federal immigration minister of not understanding the B次元官网网址渄ifference between asylum seekers and economic migrants.B次元官网网址

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston said on X, B次元官网网址淚t is simply unacceptable for the Trudeau government to try to force thousands of asylum seekers on our province at this time. Nova Scotia simply does not have the capacity to accept thousands of asylum seekers.B次元官网网址

Jeremy Harrison, SaskatchewanB次元官网网址檚 minister of immigration, said the province had not made an agreement with the federal government regarding the resettlement of would-be refugees.

B次元官网网址淪askatchewan would strongly oppose any move by the federal government to unilaterally allocate asylum seekers to our province and has made that very clear directly at meetings of federal and provincial immigration ministers,B次元官网网址 he said in a statement.

John Rustad, leader of the Conservative Party of British Columbia, called OttawaB次元官网网址檚 plan to B次元官网网址渇orceB次元官网网址 about 21,000 asylum seekers onto the province without any financial support B次元官网网址渁 reckless decision.B次元官网网址

New Brunswick Liberal Leader Susan Holt accused Higgs of manufacturing a distraction with a provincial election on the horizon. B次元官网网址淧remier Higgs is once again being reckless and exaggerating the facts while trying to create division and fear about this news on potential asylum seekers,B次元官网网址 she said in a statement.

New Brunswick Green Leader David Coon said he B次元官网网址渏ust about fell on the floorB次元官网网址 when he heard Higgs talk about the B次元官网网址渟cary picture of thousands and thousands of people coming into New Brunswick.B次元官网网址

B次元官网网址淚t was despicable. HeB次元官网网址檚 clearly decided to take the low road in this campaign, to adopt some, letB次元官网网址檚 say Trump-lite, to do fearmongering,B次元官网网址 Coon said, referencing former United States president Donald Trump.

Coon said asylum seekers, most of whom are trying to escape dangerous situations from their home countries, bring tremendous energy and contribute positively to society.

B次元官网网址淭his is the premier practising fearmongering to gaslight or light up people out there who hold prejudice and bigotry in their views.B次元官网网址
