View Royal and Colwood seek Emergency Support Services volunteers

Support your neighbours and community as an ESS Volunteer Responder

View Royal and Colwood are looking for volunteers and businesses interesting in supporting the local Emergency Social Services program.

 

Emergency Support Services (ESS) is a provincial program delivered by local authorities B´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·“ including View Royal and Colwood B´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·“ that supports citizens impacted by disasters by providing short-term assistance to meet their basic needs.

Residents forced from their homes due to fire, flood, earthquake, weather-related emergency evacuations and other emergency situations may receive basic emergency support services B´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·“ or ESS B´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·“ for up to 72 hours.

As part of preparing for a potential emergency, residents are urged to get the on their mobile device or tablet B´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·“ this government digital ID may help you receive support through ESS during an evacuation. Registering on the app will prepare you to register through for ESS support.

ESS Volunteer Responders may be your family members, your neighbours or your friends. They have received training through the Justice Institute of British Columbia, sponsored by Emergency Management Climate Readiness, and are trained to respond to emergencies when requested by local authorities. 

When a smaller number of people are affected, Emergency Support Services may be called to help. If the emergency is larger and many families are affected, ESS Volunteer Responders may be asked to open a reception centre where evacuated families would be directed for emergency support services. A reception centre is a safe place for evacuees to meet and receive support; the location would be announced at the time of the evacuation.

Be involved in your community as an ESS Volunteer Responder

From single-family emergencies to larger evacuations affecting the greater community, local Emergency Support Services teams rely on on-the-ground Volunteer Responders who support residents from communities in their time of need, at any time of the day or night. 

The Justice Institute of BC does much of the, both in-person and online. Additionally, volunteers maintain emergency supplies throughout their area, attend public relations events, contact suppliers/vendors for their support and practice training to open a reception centre or group lodging.

Community-minded business owners interested in participating in the local Emergency Support Services Program are also encouraged to get involved.
