The Royal Bay Secondary School senior girls volleyball team will be moving on to the Island Championships after winning the Lower Island Sr. Girls AAAA Championships and defeating their rival Claremont Spartans.
Royal Bay Ravens coach Bruce McElroy said though the win felt good, there's still much work to do.
"The journey is not over, it's this one step on the road to our ultimate goal of [claiming] a birth at provincials," he said. "So we enjoyed it for the night, and then the next practice we were [ready] to go again."
Though the team is looking for a berth at provincials, they first need to make it through the Island Championships where they will likely face their rivals again.
"We fully expect to see Claremont again. As of right now, there's only one berth to the provincials from the Islands, so that could be a big match. We have split with Claremont with all of our matches this year, us winning the first, them winning the second," McElroy explained. "We hope to break that cycle and earn a berth to the [provincials]. Claremont is also deserving of going to provincials and we're hoping to hear about a second berth in the next couple of days. They should get their props, they're a great team. We've battled with them all season."
Among some names to look out for in the coming games, McElroy said Lauren Matthes has been a strong leader, Eva Sagodi has been a threat from the service line, and Eva Holzmann has been instrumental in distributing the ball to the team's hitters.
B次元官网网址淲e have a good balance of 12s and 11s that have contributed to our success this season," he said.
The Island Championship will be held at Claremont Secondary School on Nov. 15 and 16.
