West Shore locals encouraged to have a say on future of sports facilities

A new master plan will help highlight what recreation and sport facilities are in demand in the region

Residents and community groups across the West Shore have been invited to have their say to help shape the future of recreation and sports facilities in the region.

The West Shore Parks & Recreation Society (WSPR) will use information gathered during the consultation to create a new master plan for the region, which will identify whatB次元官网网址檚 in demand and help the society and municipalities to make informed decisions about their next steps.

B次元官网网址淒on't miss the opportunity to contribute and make a difference in the West Shore's recreational landscape,B次元官网网址 said the society in a news release.

To help better understand the sporting and recreational needs of West Shore communities, WSPR has organized a number of opportunities for the public to get involved.

Online surveys for both residents and community groups will be available until March 17; digital workshops will be held on March 4 and 6; and public engagement stations will be posted across the West Shore between March 11 to 15. Written comments or questions can also be submitted by email to cassandra@expeditionconsulting.ca until March 17.

On behalf of the City of Langford, City of Colwood, Town of View Royal, District of Metchosin and District of Highlands, WSPR operates several indoor and outdoor recreation and sport facilities, including the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre and the Q Centre arena in Colwood.

B次元官网网址 of the consultation may come as a relief to some, who have raised concerns about the region's sports facilities.

In December last year, a youth hockey club representative rang the alarm bell for the future of youth sports on the West Shore. They said a lack of new facilities, existing amenities in need of maintenance and a population steadily on the rise have created the perfect storm for West Shore youth sports organizations, which are struggling to meet demand.

However, WSPR has said their master plan study "does not imply that any new facilities will be developed."
