A group of Saanich secondary students invited fellow scholars to join them in exploring new cultures and experiencing other parts of the world as part of their third annual Culture Day.

On Wednesday (May 29) during the lunch hour at Reynolds Secondary School, members of the schoolB次元官网网址檚 Minority Empowerment Group held the event which offered a plethora of foods from across the globe to students looking to gain new experiences and learn about cultures and countries they might not otherwise encounter.

B次元官网网址淚t really just started as trying to have a space for people of all cultures to really just speak about their experiences,B次元官网网址 said Joe Harris, a Grade 11 student who helped organize the event. B次元官网网址淲e kind of grew to doing events and going to anti-racism events and all that good stuff to trying to promote culture and trying to promote inclusivity, especially around the school.B次元官网网址

The event had food coming from Syria, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, and Palestine.

B次元官网网址淭his is one of our most popular events. The kids are always super happy to share their cultures and I think itB次元官网网址檚 a good way for kids to learn about their cultures as well,B次元官网网址 said Alecia Jones, a social studies teacher at the school, who also leads the ME Group. B次元官网网址淚 think that this has been awesome for them developing their sense of agency and pride in their cultures.B次元官网网址

The group said this year was a success and it has only grown since it started two years ago, and they plan to continue holding the event for years to come.
