Victoria was named as the most sustainable destination in North America by the Global Destination Sustainability-Index.

Victoria has taken the top spot as the most sustainable destination in North America, according to the annual Global Destination Sustainability-Index benchmarking results.

Measuring a range of factors including regenerative tourism, circular economy practices, and climate action initiatives, the criteria aims to address the current trends and necessities in sustainable tourism.

Victoria also ranked 22nd globally, and the city was also the third highest ranking small city worldwide.

B´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·œOur city has set high standards for sustainability, not just in North America but globally," noted Victoria Mayor Marianne Alto in a news release. "The GDX-Index recognition highlights our collective efforts to create a city that prioritizes the well-being of its residents, protects our environment, and fosters responsible tourism. WeB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™re committed to continuing this work, ensuring Victoria remains a dynamic, sustainable destination for generations to come."

The index notes that Victoria stands out due to a combination of factors, including actions by the City of Victoria and the province, such as the development of extensive bike lanes, high walkability, a clean energy grid, a safe and reliable water supply, and "comprehensive" climate action plans.

From an industry standpoint, the "high percentage" of hotels with recognized sustainability certifications, reflects the local tourism industryB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s commitment to environmental responsibility.

"We are honoured to lead the way in sustainable tourism and to share our journey with the world. Sustainability is core to our community values. As an organization, we chose to put sustainability at the centre of our brand in 2020 because it reflects who we are as a community, and our commitment to taking care of this place that we love for future generations of residents and visitors," noted Destination Greater Victoria CEO Paul Nursey in the release.

Destination Greater Victoria says the results will enhance their competitiveness in securing meetings and conference bids. By positioning Victoria as a leader in sustainable tourism, they think they can attract more "high-value business, particularly during off-peak seasons, thereby contributing to the steady growth of the local visitor economy."
