A new grant could help a local non-profit increase animal-adoption rates in Greater Victoria.

Earlier this month, the Pedigree Foundation B´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·“ a philanthropic organization dedicated to helping dogs in need B´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·“ announced that it plans to deliver $100,000 in funding to 10 animal shelters in Canada. The goal: to help dogs living in shelters find forever homes.

The Victoria Humane Society is the only Island non-profit receiving funding, which could help with a range of initiatives, including fostering and behavioural training programs, according to the Pedigree Foundation.

"Every month, we rescue literally dozens of dogs and cats, and sometimes other small animals, many from horrific circumstances such as neglect, starvation and abuse," the Saanich-based shelter said on its website. "The associated costs of rescue are significant, from arranging transportation for the animals out of remote communities and into our care, to emergency medical bills to save animals lives, to spay and neuter costs, vaccinations, hospitalizations, medications and ongoing food costs and incidentals."

Across Canada, some 39,000 dogs live in shelters and rescues, according to the State of Pet Homelessness Report, which uses global data to help readers understand the state of abandoned pets world-wide.

"This year we are seeing the length of stay continue to increase for many dogs in shelters across the country," Lisa Campbell, president of the Pedigree Foundation's board of directors, said in a news release. "Our grants ... help reduce the length of stay and increase adoption overall, allowing shelters and rescues to create the program changes needed to help more homeless dogs in their communities."
