Sooke museum turns from the past to its future

As the museum prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2027, its looking for residents to help them make some changes

The Sooke Region Museum's 50th anniversary is still a couple of years away but as it moves towards it, the museum is looking back on its history and hoping to get some residents involved in shaping its future.

B次元官网网址淎s the museum approaches its 50th anniversary in 2027, weB次元官网网址檙e looking for input from residents and visitors from East Sooke to Port Renfrew to reflect the needs, values, and stories of the region and create a shared vision for the future,B次元官网网址 said Doni Eve, Sooke Region Historical Society's president.

The long-running Sooke museum announced on Feb. 10 that residents would be invited to respond to a community-wide survey on the museumB次元官网网址檚 current offerings and provide new ideas for their future. B次元官网网址淵our ideas belong in a museum,B次元官网网址 said Michelle Richard, museum executive director.

The survey aims to learn more about how residents engage with the museum by asking how often they visit, what they experience, and what they want to see in the future. The museum also took the opportunity to unveil its new logo alongside the survey announcement.

B次元官网网址淲e asked local designer Jen Eckert to update the best elements of the former logo, and local artist Shelley Davies added Indigenous elements,B次元官网网址 said Richard. Some key elements in the new logo were the tin roof of the museum, the lighthouse and a tree symbolizing Sitka and western red cedar trees, all symbols closely tied to the Sooke's local history and natural heritage.

The raven and bald eagle included in the logo represent its new Indigenous elements. B次元官网网址淚 chose the bald eagle B次元官网网址楺elensenB次元官网网址 for its wisdom. Known to be highly regarded by coast Salish as it flies high and close the creator,B次元官网网址 said Davies. B次元官网网址淚 also chose the Raven not because he is a trickster but because he is also known to bring back higher knowledge from the Creator. The Raven has also been referred to as a storyteller which I feel represents the museum.B次元官网网址

Interested residents can find the Sooke Regional Museum survey available now on alongside their new logo.
