The District of Sooke announced continued progress on the Little River Crossing Project. During the Sept. 23 council meeting, the municipality approved the issuance of a development permit for the construction of a multi-use trail and bridge.
The new infrastructure will connect Sunriver Way near Ecole Poirier Elementary School, improving pedestrian travel between SookeB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s town core and the Sunriver neighbourhood.
Mayor Maja Tait highlighted the project's significance, stating it represents a major step forward in SookeB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s trail system.
"It reflects our commitment to creating a walkable, connected community while protecting and enhancing our natural environment, and providing alternative means to get around Sooke to lessen reliance on Highway 14," she said.
The Little River Crossing will offer a safe, scenic route for pedestrians and cyclists, promoting outdoor activity and addressing transportation challenges. The trail and bridge will transform an approximately 8-kilometre round trip on Highway 14 into a 1.2-kilometre walk or wheel route.
The projectB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s full completion is projected for fall 2025.
