Residents attending council meetings are now permitted to be some signs into the chambers after the council procedure bylaw was amended to allow them on May 6.

The bylaw previously prohibited signs in council chambers.

Now, only signs on handles are not permitted and are to be left outside during hearings.

Langford Coun. Kimberly Guiry said they were concerned about bringing more prominent signs into the chambers as it might obstruct the view of other audience members.

Signs permitted in council chambers must not contain illustrations or statements considered defamatory or derogatory.

Changes to the bylaw will also allow those partaking in the public participation segment of a meeting only to have the first initial and last name and the municipality from which they are from recorded.

Previously, the first initial, last name and street name of members of the public speaking were recorded.
