Popular Sidney waterfront restaurant closes, citing rising costs

Customers call the closing of Sea Glass Waterfront Grill a 'big loss to the community'

Another landmark restaurant on the Peninsula has closed its doors weeks after announced it was closing on Dec. 21 and on New Year's Eve.

The owners of Sea Glass Waterfront Grill at Van Isle Marina on Harbour Road in Sidney announced their permanent closure on Saturday (Dec. 28).

"Unfortunately, the cost of doing business has increased three-fold, if not more since we took over in September 2022 and although we could put our prices up, we don't feel right charging what we would have to even break even," said the owners in an online post. "Sea Glass is not alone B´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·“ all restaurants are struggling and it won't be long before a burger and fries will be over $30."

The online post garnered hundreds of comments and shares from customers, including one who described the closure as a "big loss to the community."

"This was a sudden decision on Friday (Dec. 27) night brought on by Zach (Vincent) and I splitting after 10 years," said Ann Lockley. "We are working on making sure our staff are okay and what to do with the perishable food. Gift cards will be figured out soon."

Vincent and Lockley took over Sea Glass Waterfront Grill from original owners Chef Ron Vincent and his wife Maureen, who opened the restaurant in 2012.

"Thank you all for your love of the restaurant through the years and sharing your birthdays, anniversaries, engagements and even weddings with us. We hope to see you around town and again," they said.
