A major Saanich thoroughfare is set to reopen Friday morning, two days after a wind-fuelled building fire left a scattering of charred debris and melted street signs.
The District of Saanich reports Quadra Street will reopen to single-lane traffic in both directions at 7 a.m. Friday.
Quadra Street closed in the early hours of Nov. 20 as Saanich fire crews battled a massive blaze in a building under construction. Neighbours, who were evacuated from their homes, reported in adjacent yards.
The displaced residents returned to their homes later that day.
The fire at the corner of Quadra Street, at Lodge Avenue required a team of 22 Saanich firefighters and mutual aid from the Victoria Fire Department. Since then the road has remained closed as fire and public works crews secure the scene, clear debris and repair damaged infrastructure.
BC Hydro teams worked through the night restoring power to the area the next morning, the District of Saanich said in a news release issued the afternoon of Nov. 21. A damaged telecommunications pole requires removal, with timing yet to be determined.
The Saanich Police Department is leading the investigation into the cause of the fire.
