A cougar spotted by Oak Bay police near Cadboro Bay is prompting a reminder to be wary of wildlife.
The wildcat was spotted by officers Jan. 7 shortly after 7 p.m. in the 3500-block of Beach Drive, not far from Cadboro-Gyro Park in Saanich and the Royal Victoria Yacht Club in Oak Bay.
The BC Conservation Officer Service has been notified and police advise residents to use safety precautions in thea area.
Be aware of surroundings, keep an eye on children and pets, particularly near dawn and dusk, avoid hiking or jogging alone and make noise when possible.
Anyone who sees a cougar should not approach but maintain a safe distance and back away slowly. Never run.
Usually encountered near dusk and dawn when cougars are most active, the animals are generally elusive and rarely attack humans, a hungry cougar may come into contact with people during its search for food.
In the event of a cougar encounter, WildSafeBC advises picking up any children, acting big and slowly backing away to give the cougar a clear escape route. If a cougar follows, respond aggressively by making loud noises, maintaining eye contact and grabbing any nearby sticks and rocks to use as weapons. If a cougar attacks, fight back.
