Sidney is among the top 25 places in Canada for do-it-yourself movers, according to U-Haul.
A new report listed the town as the second-highest city in B.C. where people are moving to in 2024 after Chilliwack, which ranks 16th in Canada. Sidney ranks number 20 in Canada.
"We love living near Sidney and walk the seawall a few times a week," says Cathy Barber who lives nearby in Saanichton. "Very nice little town with unique shopping. Everything we need is close by or right in town. I like being near the airport and ferries too."
In terms of netting U-Haul customers, B.C. came in second to Alberta in the 2024 data analysis for one-way customer transactions.
"People are still moving to British Columbia because it is beautiful and offers a slower, laid-back lifestyle," said Naga Chennamsetty, the vice-president of the U-Haul area district, in a recent press release.
Other cities in the province that made the list are Trail (22), Kelowna (23) and Nanaimo (25).
The index report is determined by U-Haul; it's based on the net gain or loss of one-way equipment from customer transactions in each city over a calendar year.
"The data is an effective gauge of how well provinces and cities are attracting and maintaining residents, rather than reflecting population or economic growth," U-Haul said.
The U-Haul Growth Index is based on more than 2.5 million one-way U-Haul truck, trailer, and U-Box moving container transactions annually across Canada and the United States.
