Lantern ceremony in Esquimalt to remember those affected by Hiroshima

The annual lantern ceremony in remembrance of the atomic bombings in Japan in 1945 will be held on August 6 at Gorge Park Pavillion.

Greater Victoria residents are invited to celebrate peace, launch lanterns, and enjoy Japanese culture at the 79th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

The Honouring Peace event will be held at the Gorge Park Pavilion in Esquimalt on Tuesday, August 6, to remember those who were affected by the bombings, and celebrating peace through music, poetry, dance and drumming "that moves and inspires us," according to a news release.

The event is supported by the Greater Victoria Peace School, the Victoria Nikkei Cultural Society, the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War Canada, GettinB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™ Higher Choir and the Victoria Multifaith Society.

Attendees are asked to bring lawn chairs or a blanket if possible, and a donation bottle will be passed for those who would like to contribute to the cost of the event.

Lantern-making will begin at 6:00 p.m. on the ground floor of the pavilion, with all materials provided. The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. and end with the launching of the lanterns in the pavilion reflecting pools at 9 p.m.
