Central Saanich council voted to support a third reading of the 1934 Hovey Rd. project on Monday (March 10).

The decision comes just three days after a two-day last week that drew hundreds of people opposing and supporting the affordable housing project.

Council listened to arguments made by the community on the proposed change to the OCP zoning bylaw, as well as a development permit with variances for the 187-unit rental on 7551 East Saanich Rd. and 1934B次元官网网址�1966 Hovey Rd.

Aryze Developments in partnership with Legion Manor Victoria is hoping to deliver affordable and attainable rentals for seniors, veterans, young families and the workforce with two four-storey rental buildings, one with market rental units and one with senior housing proposed.

This would require the district to amend existing OCP designation from neighbourhood residential to multi-unit residential as well as the proposed change in zoning from residential corridor to residential-neighbourhood and any variances requested, such as height, setbacks, lot coverage and parking.

Council voted 4-3 B次元官网网址� with Couns. Zeb King, Gord Newton and Robert Thomas opposed.

Mayor Ryan Windsor stated that he has yet to decide how he will vote.

"I do think we do need to take more time.There are steps that can be taken and ultimately while those steps do involve some level of work. IB次元官网网址檓 prepared to see those happen as well as any minor proposed changes that might be considered by council and then would weigh those as part of my final decision, which I will make at final adoption.B次元官网网址�

No date has been set when council will give final adoption to the contentious housing project.
