A Saanich police officer died Wednesday, March 5 after suffering a medical emergency while on duty.
"It's with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of one of our officers," Saanich PD Chief Dean Duthie said in a news release. "Our focus and attention will remain on all staff and the officerB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s family to ensure that the appropriate and required supports are in place."
Saanich PD noted its leadership, critical incident support management and peer support teams are busy supporting staff and the officer's family at this time.
"It is important that I recognize our officers and staff continue to provide policing and public safety services to Saanich as they process their own emotions and sense of loss B´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·“ this exemplifies teamwork, support and commitment," added Duthie, who also thanked Emergency Health Services, medical teams at Royal Jubilee Hospital, Saanich Fire, Victoria Police, Oak Bay Police, Central Saanich Police, West Shore RCMP and other partner agencies for the support and assistance they provided yesterday.
To show support to the police department and the officer's family, a procession of first responders from other communities drove past Saanich PD headquarters on Thursday, March 6.
