Navy personnel participate in Shakeout drill in Esquimalt

CFB Esquimalt members joined thousands of British Columbians in the B.C. Shakeout

Along with many B.C. residents, on Thursday, Oct. 17, CFB Esquimalt personnel participated in the B.C. Shakeout, an earthquake safety drill where residents "drop, cover and hold on" to practise in case of a natural disaster.

At the navy base, the exercise included the activation of the Mass Notification System while Defence Team members mustered and deployed at Disaster Response Box locations, and the activation of the baseB次元官网网址檚 Emergency Operations Centre.

"For the Defence Team, earthquake response is not just a professional priority: we strongly encourage our members to be prepared in their personal lives by knowing the hazards, making a plan for the safety and care of their loved ones and preparing emergency supplies at home," noted navy Capt. Kevin Whiteside, Base Commander, in an emailed statement.

In the event of an earthquake, The Great British Columbia Shakeout recommends residents drop to the ground, take cover by getting under a sturdy desk or table and to hold on to it until the shaking stops.

"A major earthquake in our region will strain resources at every level. Personal preparation will not only reduce the pressures on emergency service providers, it will free up people who could be helping others rather than requiring help themselves,B次元官网网址 Whiteside noted.
