'Music, magic and mirth': Award-winning musical coming to Oak Bay stage

The Canadian College of Performing Arts Studio Ensemble will take to the stage for Ride The Cyclone Feb. 7 to 15.

The Canadian College of Performing Arts (CCPA) is set to perform a BԪַhome-grown musical sensationBԪַ next month. 

BԪַRide the Cyclone is a classic Canadian musical that has thrilled audiences all over the world,BԪַ the productionBԪַs director Jordan Laffrenier said in a news release. BԪַIt is an honour to work with the students of CCPA to present the show in the city it was written.BԪַ 

Created by Canadians Jacob Richmond and Brooke Maxwell, and first performed in Victoria in 2008, the CPPA will stage the play eight times between Feb. 7 and 15 at the schoolBԪַs performance hall in Oak Bay.  

The comic story revolves around six Saskatchewan teens killed during a roller coaster accident, who must impress a fortune teller to come back to life. Over the years, the play has grown in popularity, landing off-Broadway in 2016, where it won several awards. The musical even sparked a viral trend on TikTok in 2022.

BԪַPacked with music, magic and mirth, this masterpiece of musical theatre has made its way around the world and now comes back to the Island,BԪַ the school said in the same news release.

The Studio Ensemble is an intense performing arts training program at CCPA that gives emerging artists a bridge into the industry through comprehensive training on all aspects of production through one-on-one mentorships. Ride the Cyclone is the first musical production of CCPABԪַs 2024/25 season, and final production for the Studio Ensemble company this year.
