An origin story about the Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix, a Mr. Rogers biopic with Tom Hanks and a film about strippers scamming Wall Street bankers with Jennifer Lopez and Cardi B are among the films premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

TIFF Artistic Director Cameron Bailey and Executive Director Joana Vicente announced 16 gala selections and 37 in the special presentation category Tuesday morning, including Todd PhillipsBԪַ BԪַJoker,BԪַ Marielle HellerBԪַs BԪַA Beautiful Day in the NeighborhoodBԪַ and Lorene ScafariaBԪַs BԪַHustlers.BԪַ Iranian-born director Marjane SatrapiBԪַs Marie Curie film BԪַRadioactive,BԪַ in which Rosamund Pike plays the groundbreaking physicist, will close the festival on Sept. 15.

Bailey told The Associated Press that BԪַJokerBԪַ is somewhat of a first for the festival.

BԪַThis is our first entry into the superhero world as far as I can remember,BԪַ he said. BԪַBut itBԪַs a really original vision. ItBԪַs disturbing, utterly compelling, really gripping from start to finish. BԪַ And one of the most remarkable things is that Joaquin Phoenix, in a career of great performances, gives one of his very best.BԪַ

Other standout performances the programmers love are Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx in Destin Daniel CrettonBԪַs civil rights drama BԪַJust Mercy,BԪַ Meryl Streep in Steven SoderberghBԪַs investigative journalism drama BԪַThe Laundromat,BԪַ Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson in Noah BaumbachBԪַs divorce saga BԪַMarriage StoryBԪַ and Renee Zellweger in the Judy Garland biopic BԪַJudy.BԪַ

BԪַItBԪַs one of those career-best performances,BԪַ Bailey said. BԪַAnd thatBԪַs coming from a guy who absolutely loves BԪַJerry Maguire.BԪַBԪַ

The Toronto selections often help define the looming awards race. Last year, TIFFBԪַs audience award winner BԪַGreen BookBԪַ went on to win the best picture Oscar.

BԪַItBԪַs not the motivation, but itBԪַs always great to be a launchpad for films that will be part of the awards conversation,BԪַ Vicente said.

Other high-profile films premiering include James MangoldBԪַs BԪַFord v FerrariBԪַ with Christian Bale and Matt Damon, Kasi LemmonsBԪַ Harriet Tubman film BԪַHarrietBԪַ starring Cynthia Erivo, Rian JohnsonBԪַs star-studded ode to Agatha Christie BԪַKnives Out,BԪַ with Chris Evans and Daniel Craig, Edward NortonBԪַs adaptation of BԪַMotherless Brooklyn,BԪַ John CrowleyBԪַs adaptation of BԪַThe GoldfinchBԪַ and the Bruce Springsteen concert film BԪַWestern Stars.BԪַ

Some, a little less flashy, but just as worthy according to Bailey include the cancer drama BԪַThe Friend,BԪַ from Gabriela Cowperthwaite with Dakota Johnson and Casey Affleck, the animated teen love story BԪַWeathering With You,BԪַ from Makoto Shinkai, the Japanese director of the anime breakout BԪַYour Name,BԪַ and Michael WinterbottomBԪַs BԪַGreed.BԪַ

Bailey said BԪַGreed,BԪַ about the economy of fast fashion, is BԪַone everybody should see.BԪַ

Steve Coogan plays a mogul in the fast fashion world and it is BԪַvery funny and very biting.BԪַ

And then of course there is BԪַHustlers,BԪַ with Lopez and Constance Wu, which Bailey said is BԪַa great watch.BԪַ

BԪַIt feels like BԪַCasinoBԪַ or BԪַGoodfellas,BԪַBԪַ he said. BԪַBut instead of gangsters killing, these are women just scamming these guys.BԪַ

Although films arenBԪַt selected with any theme or agenda in mind, Bailey said some do emerge eventually.

BԪַIt became clear that although weBԪַre living in a complicated, difficult world with a lot of conflict, a lot of the films that really resonated the most this year were ones that were about empathy, about reaching out and across borders to other people,BԪַ Bailey said. BԪַMaybe most emblematic of that is BԪַA Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,BԪַ but also BԪַJust Mercy,BԪַ a really tough film about the death penalty BԪַ and BԪַJojo Rabbit.BԪַBԪַ

BԪַJojo Rabbit,BԪַ from filmmaker Taika Waititi, is about a young member of a Hitler Youth group.

BԪַBut he grows, he changes, he learns,BԪַ Bailey said. BԪַAnd you begin to feel at least some empathy for the possibility of change.BԪַ

Vicente added that it was BԪַone of our favourites. It really surprises and we all kind of fell in love with it.BԪַ

The festival kicks off Sept. 5 with the previously announced opening-night film BԪַOnce Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and The Band.BԪַ More films will be announced in the coming weeks.
