Life in a war-torn nation is hard to imagine for those who have not lived through the harsh realities.

However, itBԪַs top of mind for a West Shore team as they prepare for their third trip to Ukraine.

Former Langford fire chief Bob Becket and retired RCMP staff sergeant Bruce Brown lead this upcoming operation with Colwood Coun. Ian Ward coordinating West Shore fundraising efforts from home.

Building on the connections established during prior trips, the team is preparing to fulfil as many major goals as possible outlined by people and groups in Ukraine.

For example, western Ukraine hospitals will receive 14 pallets of supplies and equipment to help improve care. One town will also receive a school bus to help take kids from schools without bomb shelters to safer options with basements. Due to the lack of school bomb shelters, 500 electronic notebooks will also be given to distance education students.

Hope Foundation UkraineBԪַs displaced family centre in Poland is also slated to receive childrenBԪַs backpacks with BԪַcomfortBԪַ items. This temporary shelter helps women and children fleeing to other countries, including those who may end up on the West Shore.

BԪַDue to the security of the whole city in Ukraine we cannot disclose specifically location or dates, but I assure everyone that we will provide updates and report back once we return safely,BԪַ Beckett said.

The team aims to raise another $50,000 for additional medical supplies that will be purchased by GlobalMedic and distributed by Ukraine Medicine in Action.

Along the lines of educational exchange, the team will also meet with four Grade 11 Ukrainian students about to embark on a life-changing journey. The Sooke School District and Bamfield Marine Sciences Center will host these students for three weeks in spring 2024, allowing them to study in Canada, live with a West Shore family, and make lasting ties with local youngsters.

BԪַDespite the challenges, it is our hope that these people experience worth and generosity that I know our community can offer, as well an unforgettable experience of friendship, adventure and above all, peace,BԪַ said SD62 board chair Amanda Dowhy.

Donations can be made online at or in-person at the Langford fire hall at 2625 Peatt Rd. Every cent donated is going towards equipment and supplies to be provided to hospitals, schools and students.
