It likely comes as no surprise, considering the scene many Comox Valley residents woke up to on Monday, but Van Isle Violet is predicting six more weeks of winter.
Violet is the local "groundhog" who predicts the end of the cold season every year. This year, Violet woke up on Groundhog Day (Sunday, Feb. 3) to see her shadow, predicting more of the wintery weather to come. On a video posted to Facebook by the Marmot Recovery Foundation, Violet does stretch her paw towards the "six more weeks of winter" sign, solidifying her prediction.
The group is looking forward to releasing another 40 marmots into the wild, according to the video.
"Marmots are really evolved around winter," said Adam Taylor from the foundation during the video. "They have an incredible hibernation cycle. They dig deep burrows to escape the snow and the cold. For them, an early spring is a kind of mixed blessing. In the short term, if spring comes early it also means there's a lot of fresh vegetation coming early too.
"But in the long term, snow is also what makes the marmots' meadow habitat. Snow's movement acts like a grader that is going to scrape small trees off of the landscape, and that's what creates marmot meadows."
