PHOTOS: With a sneer, Grinch on the Gorge spreads holiday cheer in Esquimalt

Paddle boarders, kayakers were cheered on by locals of all ages

There was holiday cheering (and sneering) on the Gorge Waterway in Esquimalt, thanks to a motley crew of festive characters.

With the sole aim of putting a smile on people's faces, paddle boarders and kayakers, led by the Grinch, floated their way around the Gorge on Saturday (Dec. 14).

Behind the grumpy green mask is Metchosin resident Curtis Becker, who first had the idea for the 'Grinch on the Gorge' event four years ago.

"I just wanted to have some Christmas fun and put the spirit out there," said Becker, who also volunteers for the 14th Juan de Fuca Scouting Group in Metchosin.

Since its launch the event has grown in popularity, although this year the threat of strong winds kept most people at home.

But while the group was small, the festive spirit was bright, with locals of all ages cheering the group on.

Among the onlookers were siblings seven-year-old Chloe Curtis and four-year-old Taiga Curtis, who posed for photos with the Grinch when he was back on dry land B´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·“ but not before he promised to not steal Christmas this year.

Also joining Becker on the water, dressed as a gingerbread person, was his daughter Alyssa, who days before the event had returned home for the holidays from Scotland, U.K., where she is studying veterinary medicine.

Paddle boarding with the Grinch on a cold December morning is certainly one way to deal with jet lag.
