A dedicated group of volunteers paired up under sunny skies and chilly conditions to build skills in Metchosin over the weekend.
Metchosin Search and Rescue, with gear borrowed from the Victoria Orienteering Club, practised navigating a series of checkpoints B´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·“ honing kills including reading a map, route finding, compass work, and relocating on a map.
Founded in 1989, the organization provides SAR services in Metchosin, Langford, Colwood, Highlands, View Royal, Esquimalt, Victoria and Oak Bay and as a mutual aid resource in other areas of the region and province.
Support includes wilderness or urban searches, evidence searches and assistance during emergencies.
Members hail from across the region and are trained in search theory and technique, first aid, wilderness navigation and survival, radio communications as well as evacuation and emergency support.
