Langford increasing its bylaw officers in the summer may have contributed to lower public alcohol consumption in the parks.
The city hired two auxiliary bylaw officers from May 15 to Sept. 15 to work in addition to two full-time bylaw officers and Lorne Fletcher, Langford manager of community safety and municipal enforcement.
"They did a fantastic job, they were out early and hitting the local trails and parks," Fletcher said. "There were no really occasions to issue violation tickets."
In the spring Langford announced it would be issuing $100 fines to anyone drinking alcohol in the city parks.
"We got the word out and had our presence in the community. We were quite prepared to write the fines," Fletcher said. "People were very responsive."
The auxiliary officers were hired due to an increase in alcohol use the previous summer. The city was receiving calls and complaints from people in the parks and residents living nearby during the summer months in 2012.
"I would certainly encourage council to consider doing it again next summer," Fletcher said. "It did prove to be so positive.
