Businesses and individuals are invited to help clean up litter, both big and small, by participating in a community cleanup on April 14.

The region-wide event is hosted by Transition Sooke Society, and to spice things up, the clean up is intended to be a friendly competition between communities.

Zero Waste Sooke is looking for teams in Beecher Bay, SciaBԪַnew First Nation, East Sooke, District of Sooke, TBԪַSou-ke First Nation, Otter Point, Shirley, Jordan River, Port Renfrew and the Pacheedaht First Nation communities.

Teams in each area can start and finish any time they like that day, but asked to take a photo of themselves by their haul and submit a final registration form when they are finished. There is no limit to how many teams can be involved.

So far, about 24 people have signed up, but organizer Wendy OBԪַConnor hopes more than 100 people participate.

BԪַThe more people we can get bending down and grabbing that piece of garbage that we all see, the more likely it will become a habit in the future,BԪַ Morton said.

Last year, about 50 people participated in Sooke alone. Morton said her goal this year is to get as much garbage off the ground as possible, and to recycle as much of it as they can.

Gloves, bags and bins for metal, garbage, and recycling will be provided. Registration is free.

Those who wish to participate in the cleanup can contact Wendy OBԪַConnor at wendyoconnor@me.com, or by phone at 250-361-6965.
