City of Colwood set to get its hands dirty

Colwood targets green thumbs in new city hall initiative for fall growing

Fresh fruits and veggies could grow outside the doors of Colwood city hall by this fall.

Municipal staff are asking community residents to weigh in on the idea of installing a garden space at city hall (3300 Wishart Rd.). Up for consideration is the size of the garden, location and the model for its use by community members.

B次元官网网址淚tB次元官网网址檚 been in our official community plan since 2008. ThereB次元官网网址檚 a lot of policies in there supporting food and food production,B次元官网网址 said planning technician Richard Walker.

Walker is looking at two models the garden could follow. With one a large, shared garden would be tended to by a group of residents, who would then equally enjoy its bounties come harvest. In the other residents would get individual plots within the larger garden.

B次元官网网址淲e have heard, however, that there are some examples of community gardens which have both models integrated into it, which could be an interesting approach,B次元官网网址 Walker said.

Volunteers would be needed to organize, secure donations and build the garden.

Residents interested in providing input can call Walker at 250-478-5999.
