The Prince Edward branch of the Royal Canadian Legion will continue its tradition of remembering and reminding with a parade and candlelight vigil Saturday (April 9).

The event has taken place every year since the Vimy Ridge War Memorial, based on the original in France, was completed at Veterans Memorial Park in 2001 by sculptor Derek Rowe.

Legion president Norm Scott said the event has always included local cadets and youth from the community. BԪַThey are the future and they need to understand the importance of the history and sacrifices made,BԪַ he said.

J.R. Bouradge, who spent 38 years in the Royal Canadian Navy, said the ceremony signifies a passing of the torch from veterans to young people to ensure those who paid the ultimate price will never be forgotten.

The parade will leave the Legion at 7:45 p.m. and march to Veterans Memorial Park. The ceremony involves lighting candles at the corners of the Vimy Memorial, six monuments and maple leaf plaques commemorating local veterans who died serving their country.

The  plaque at the base of the sculpture is set in a piece of concrete from the original sculpture in France that the Legion was able to obtain.

Scott said those in attendance are encouraged to return to the Legion on Station avenue for refreshments and the opportunity to speak to veterans.
