Belmont reassures students with lockdown exercise

Shortly before 10 a.m. tomorrow (Jan. 15) staff, students and RCMP will hold an exercise to inform and empower students

Belmont school will lock down tomorrow morning to practice safety.

The school will hold a Lockdown Awareness Exercise at 9:55 a.m. tomorrow (Jan. 15).

The intent is to educate and empower staff, students and even parents, who were told of the drill in a letter home.

B次元官网网址淚tB次元官网网址檚 the same idea that kids have to learn the protocol for fire drills,B次元官网网址 said vice principal Mike Huck. B次元官网网址淲eB次元官网网址檙e asking kids to do the same thing with lockdown events ... itB次元官网网址檚 to give kids knowledge and sense of safety.B次元官网网址

The provincewide initiative starts with an announcement from the office that ends in B次元官网网址渓ockdown, lockdown, lockdown.B次元官网网址

B次元官网网址淭hereB次元官网网址檚 four things weB次元官网网址檙e concerned about really, they are: lock the door, lights out, get quiet and stay out of sight,B次元官网网址 Huck said.

Then they await the okay from the office, or emergency personnel.

B次元官网网址淭he idea behind keeping it simple is offering reassurance to kids,B次元官网网址 Huck said. B次元官网网址淭hatB次元官网网址檚 designed to reassure kids and make it simple for staff to follow because in an event like that you can be pretty scattered.B次元官网网址

The only lockdown situations Huck recalls at Belmont over the past year have been exercises.

B次元官网网址(Lockdowns) do happen for sure and you have to have the kids prepared for this,B次元官网网址 Huck said.

Local RCMP will be involved in the 15 to  20 minute exercise that does not include evacuating the school.
