The weather is certainly starting to change and the nights are getting darker and darker; just a reminder to everyone that the clocks will be rolling back one hour on the weekend so we can have an extra hour of sleep. Also with the darker nights make sure that you keep your vehicles locked, and remember to not leave valuables in your car.
The West Shore Chamber celebrated their Best of the West Shore awards at their annual event on Friday night at Olympic View Golf Course. Some of the recipients included Saunders Subaru in the category of Business of the Year, Bikram Hot Yoga for the BԪַFittest BusinessBԪַ Award and Quality Foods took home the award for BԪַBringing home the Bacon.BԪַ Capital Iron won the BԪַShop BԪַtil you DropBԪַ award while the BԪַTaste of ExcellenceBԪַ went to BrownBԪַs Social House. This weekend will be busy on the West Shore; you can have your picture taken with Marilyn Monroe, Dean Martin or Judy Garland by donation to charity at ReLoving FurnitureBԪַs BԪַOld HollywoodBԪַ event. Sunday, Nov. 2 from noon to 4 p.m. the life-sized (2D) stars will be featured along with the glitz, glam and bling of furniture & accessories of Old Hollywood. The second annual West Shore Seniors Show happens Nov. 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion, 761 Station Ave. in Langford. This event will have numerous vendors with very useful information on what seniorsBԪַ services are available on the West Shore. There will be door prizes along with on-site flu shots. Anyone needing transportation to and from the fair should contact Nicole at 250-391-9827. This promises to be a fun event for all.
Some of the fire halls will be open on Halloween, including View RoyalBԪַs from 6 to 9 p.m. at 280 Island Hwy. The hall will be decorated and there will be hot dogs, candy and hot chocolate. ColwoodBԪַs main fire hall is hosting a community bonfire at 3215 Metchosin Road. Also on tap are monster music and a costume contest, plus free hot dogs and hot chocolate.
Speaking of fireworks, the Halloween Spooktacular fireworks are back at Bear Mountain. Join the Westin Bear Mountain Golf resort on the Masters Terrace at 6 p.m. for Halloween treats for all ages, a costume contest and fireworks at 8 p.m. You may want to arrive early for a good viewing spot. This event is proudly supported by the City of Langford, the Bear Mountain Community Association, Mark Anthony and Coca-Cola.
Also on Nov. 1, the Mudd, Sweat and Tears obstacle course event takes place. It may not be for the faint of heart, but it promises to be a fun event for all. Visit muddsweatandtears.com or contact the West Shore Chamber for more info.
Mark your calendar for the Highlands Winter Craft Fair Nov. 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Old School House and the Caleb Pike House Heritage Park, at 1589 Millstream Rd. Admission is free and you can come and enjoy hot apple cider and fresh baking while browsing through a great selection of work from local artisans.
